NJ Catholic Bishops designate Sun. Feb. 17th as day of prayer for marriage
The New Jersey Catholic Conference has issued a press release announcing that the state’s Catholic Bishops have designated February 17th as a day of prayer for marriage. They have requested that certain prayers be said in the state’s parishes on that day. A joint letter from all the Bishops indicates:
. . . Marriage is the foundation of the family. The family, in turn, is the basic unit of society. Marriage as a union of one man and one woman has its roots not only in human tradition and history, but also in natural law, which transcends all man-made law. God himself is the author of marriage . . .
By issuing a joint letter, the Catholic bishops highlighted their concern for the serious marriage crisis facing society. In a cover letter to pastors, the bishops cited threats to marriage including cohabitation, divorce, and same-sex unions. The bishops said, “As Catholics, we do not stand by in silence in the face of these challenges that threaten the sanctity of marriage. We do not shirk our responsibility.”
